The Blade by Masuda
Effect: The performer takes a bill and a piece of paper about the same size as the bill. They are folded lengthwise. A pocket blade knife is taken out, and it is sliced right through the bill. The audience can see the blade going through the bill. The performer pulls the knife to the side, ripping paper and the bill. However, the magician restores the bill. The torn paper remains as proof of the effect.
This effect was taught by Masuda's teacher, Johnny Hirose, in Magic of Japan VHS, which is long unavailable anywhere for sale. Johnny Hirose's version utilizes a pencil and a bill which is impromptu. However, this version by Masuda is good too. It uses a different approach to Johnny Hirose's Invisible Hole.
The effect is worth the money you spend. It is very clever; I tried making the gimmick myself as taught in Magic of Japan VHS, but failed to find the right knife. Here, you get the gimmick already made.
The angles are very good.
The strongest point of the trick is when you let them see the blade running through the middle of the bill and coming out from the other side.
The knife is small, so it can be switched out if the audience wants to examine it.
The gimmick stares right into their faces yet they don't see it.
This is one of the best approaches to pencil/blade through bill.
My rating: 10/10
Totally recommended.
