I had an idea of how this might work, and I was right. I didn't have any idea however on how cleverly it's accomplished. Shigeru Sugawara is a brilliant inventor of clever methods and the Houdini Deck is a fine example of this. There are no moving parts but the box does all the work, and how it does it is very inventive. The box can be inspected, its inner secrets (yes there's more than 1) aren't noticeable.
I'm not familiar with different types of wood, but will say this box's build is standard fare with Sugawara magic. It's a softer wood and I doubt near as tough as say mahogany or oak which some other magic companies use and which can be tossed into a jacket pocket or case without concern. You can't do that with this. That being said, it is very nice and well made, it just can't be handled roughly. The gold stripe surrounding the diamond shaped cutouts is very nice and over all the box screams magic. It's an intriguing piece and one I'll actually be using because it is practical and really does work. It's easy to do, just a little practice getting the motions down correctly is all that's needed.
Basically $80 + shipping; That might seem expensive and under normal circumstances would be, but not in this case since it's a Sugawara piece and will become a collector's piece and something fellow magicians probably won't have and wish they did once it's no longer available and absorbed into collections.
